In the world......

  • In 2007 ,Five  million people died in the world as a direct result of tobacco
  • In 2025, Ten million people are expected to die from this addiction
  • In 20th Century, tobacco epidemic killed 100 million people world-wide
  • Tobacco killed 1 in 10 adults world-wide
  • If unchecked/uncontrolled, during 21st century it could kill one billion

In Pakistan.......

  • About 22-25 million are smokers
  • 55% of households contain at least one smoker (Pakistan Health Education Survey 1991, 1999)
  • Around 36% of adult males and 9% of adult females are tobacco users
  • Male to female ratio of 4:1 (National Health Survey 1996)
  • Boy to girl tobacco use ratio to be 2:1 (Global Youth Tobacco Survey 2003)
  • About 100,000 people die annually due to tobacco use
  • Use of Shisha amongst the youth is an emerging health risk

  • Tobacco use is a risk factor for six out of eight leading causes of death in the world
  • Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death (WHO 2003)
  • Tobacco is the only available consumer product which kills people when it used entirely as intended ( Oxford Medical Companion 1994)
